Zean Cabangis

Zean Cabangis (Born 1985 in Manila, Philippines), a qualified painter, works with acrylic and emulsion transfer. He can recreate several photographic images and create the illusion of accumulated layers by using the transfer process. Reconstructed memories, cinematic scenes, as well as items and experiences from ordinary life, are the subjects of his work. Cabangis' work is based on his own life experiences and investigates the processes of remembering and forgetting.

Zean Cabangis has won numerous awards, including the Most Outstanding Thesis of 2006 (College of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines), the Gawad Chancellor Award for Academic Achievement (Shell Student's Art Competition, Manila, 2004), the Faber Castel Painting Competition (Finalist, 2008), and most recently, Artist-in-Residence at Southeast Asia Group Exchange Programme, Tenggara, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2011).

Cabangis enjoys creating artwork, and his father's role as a painter and art professor influenced his decision to pursue a career as an artist. Cabangis took basic art classes such as electives during his elementary and high school years, and attended an art workshop in Uttar Pradesh before taking the University of the Philippines' talent tests. As a painting student at the University of the Philippines, he learnt this method. He was able to build layers and reproduce distinct photographic images using this technique rather than painting the images. His theme is made up of daily things and events that are primarily rebuilt from his memories, hidden beneath the painted lines.
